Modality
Cardinal, fixed, mutable. The mode of energy in a sign.
Definition
The three modalities are cardinal, fixed, and mutable. Cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn, the four that open the seasons. Fixed signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius, the four at the height of each season. Mutable signs are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces, the four at the seasonal transitions.
In context
Modality describes the mode of energy in a sign. Cardinal signs initiate. Fixed signs hold. Mutable signs adapt. Reading element together with modality gives a more accurate picture of how a sign actually behaves than either category alone. A cardinal fire sign behaves quite differently from a mutable fire sign even though both are fires.
