Ascendant

The sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth.

Definition

The Ascendant, also called the Rising sign, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. It marks the cusp of the first house of the natal chart and is calculated from your date, time, and place of birth.

In context

The Ascendant is one of the most personal points in the chart because it changes roughly every two hours. It describes the way you arrive in a room, the way strangers initially perceive you, and the lens through which you tend to meet new experience. Without an accurate birth time, the Ascendant cannot be calculated. Many astrologers treat it as the third pillar of the chart alongside the Sun and the Moon.
