Glossary
Retrograde
When a planet appears to move backward from Earth.
Definition
A planet is said to be retrograde when, viewed from Earth, it appears to move backward against the background of the zodiac. The motion is an optical effect of the relative orbits of Earth and the planet in question, not an actual reversal.
In context
Astrologically, retrograde periods are associated with internalised energy and the revisiting of themes related to the planet involved. Mercury retrograde is the most commonly discussed because it happens several times a year and is associated with disruptions in communication, travel, and technology. The personal planets retrograde less often, and the outer planets spend several months retrograde each year.
